ReconcilingWorks is proud to announce our newest Reconciling in Christ congregation St. James Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois.
“Saint James Lutheran Church of Chicago is a faith community who finds delight in being Ambassadors for Christ. We gladly share of time, money, and food to support two Food Pantries, provide regular meals for 200 homeless persons through our partnership with Chicago’s Night Ministry, and we provide free and low-cost meals at various times throughout the year to all who enjoy. We are active participants with Faith in Place, a ministry that encourages stewardship of creation and we anticipate transforming our outdoor gardens to wildflowers and milkweed to encourage re-population of the Butterflies. We participate in Farmer’s Markets.
The people of Saint James gather for Sunday Mass weekly to be fed by God’s Word both spoken and tasted. Our music ministry draws musicians from the Chicago Symphony and Chicago Lyric Opera. Our concert series features acclaimed musicians from the greater Mid-west as well as international musical artists. We host an annual Performing Arts Camp where youth from grades 1 through 9 work with professional actors, musicians, and dancers. We have added a visual arts to our program in recent years. We have an expanding education program and are exploring ways to reach out to others in their mid to late 20s.
We are host to 3 other Christian communities who make use of our space, along with over 12 Scouting units, 6 various dance and exercise groups, a Pre-K program, and open our space to many community service groups, including AA and other self-help groups.
Since adopting our Welcoming Statement, we have seen an increase in visitors and an even more positive response to welcoming persons who identify as LGBTQ.”
